Reveal: #ProjectSuperHouse, part II

We're back today with a few more spaces in our #ProjectSuperHouse, a large renovation we completed for the family of one of my dearest friends. The family likes to entertain, so opening up the floor plan and creating good "party flow" was essential. This is one of the things that I really love about my work -- getting to know my clients and anticipating their needs as we plan their spaces. Beautiful rooms are wonderful, but in an active family, proper functionality is what really adds value to a house and makes it a home.

The Kitchen

Custom cabinetry, a huge island, two sinks (one of which looks out to the backyard -- a mom's dream!), wall ovens plus a range -- now they can really spread out and prepare to feed a crowd. Everyone wanted this to be a bright, white, open space but with plenty of texture and style. We choose a dramatic waterfall edge for this island and had a plaster finish applied to the range hood. As in the rest of the home, the lighting was chosen to bring in subtle drama.

The inset cabinetry and marble backsplash are classics, and my client's vintage rug added color. A Wolf range typically has red knobs, but we swapped them for brass to match the cabinet hardware.

There's a funny story about these bar stools. Before we really got started on the project, my client ordered two of them. I advised her to scoop up a few more because you just never know what you'll be able to find later on. They ended up working well with the glam-traditional vibe of the house so we decided to use them in the new kitchen. And wouldn't you know, the retailer where she bought them had gone out of business and it was a good thing she'd already bought all four!

The Breakfast Room

The light-filled breakfast nook is tucked into a corner off the kitchen. We wanted this to be cozy but bright and keep it pretty simple to not interrupt the sight lines out to the backyard. The marble-topped Saarinen table paired with woven leather chairs are cool, but it's the light fixture that MAKES the space.

The Family Room

In this space, we worked with some of the client's existing furniture, adding a pair of cool metal and wicker armchairs by Palecek that are casual but feel sophisticated at the same time. A large leather ottoman is a comfy spot for putting up feet, and we styled it with a raffia-covered tray that can be easily moved. We added a natural fiber rug under the client's stunning antique one, and flanked the television with a pair of over-sized sconces that are real show-stoppers.

This room is definitely the hub of the house and perfect for everything from big gatherings to family movie nights. It opens into the cozy adults' den, so we used a dark stone on the fireplace surround to tie the spaces together and create continuity.

The Mudroom

In this space, function and style merge.A well-equipped mudroom adds so much storage and organization to a home, and this one is top-notch. There is a mix of open and closed storage for every member of the family to drop their coats, shoes, backpacks, and more, and we topped the laundry machines with a big stone folding table. I think the "mom's desk" is my favorite spot -- it's the perfect place to answer emails, meal plan, and keep up with all of the correspondence of a busy family, but it's out of the way of the main living spaces.

Style-wise, we wanted to use bold color but make it saturated and rich. The cabinetry is all a warm blue with green undertones that recalls the colors used elsewhere in the house. We repeated the herringbone pattern seen in the main entry, but this time with brick pavers. The bright white walls, pretty backsplash, and another pretty vintage rug round out the space.
